The Person Behind the "Tips"
Hi, I'm Kathy and I'm a mom, just like you, who deeply cares about the education of children. I grew up on a family farm in south central Minnesota. I was a secondary education English major in college, but after three years I left school and got married and two years later started raising my family.
I started home educating before there was even a law in my state saying I could legally do such a thing. My oldest child went to public school kindergarten at age five. I sewed her a new outfit, took her picture and anxiously waited until I could pick her up. Within three weeks I noticed attitude and behavior changes that were not impressive. I spent the rest of the school year talking to teachers and other parents and visiting classrooms; I was assured that the changes I witnessed were normal. I concluded that I didn't want "normal" children.
I heard about home education from the radio show Focus on the Family and wrote for more information. "You want to do what?" my husband responded. "I'll give you one year." After that one year we never looked back. It has been exhilarating and at times exhausting. I've learned so much, made some good choices and some bad choices and even though life gets messy sometimes, God is faithful.
I'm humbled that He has allowed me to share my life and faith in Christ with my children as we learned together. Ten children and 36 years later I would do it all again. May God continue to grant parents the freedom to teach and train their children for years to come.
Coram Deo,
Kathy
